Does papaya leaf juice cure dengue? During the monsoon season, many people have encountered viral messages claiming that papaya leaf juice can treat dengue, a mosquito-borne illness. One such message circulating on WhatsApp states: ‘Papaya leaf juice works wonders. The platelet count increased from 68,000 to 200,000 within 12 hours. Please share this with all your friends. Dengue cases are high across India. Please share and save lives.’ However, medical professionals have dismissed these claims, and some have even urged the government to take action against those spreading false information.
Dr. Shanti Ravindranath, Secretary of the Doctors Association for Social Equality, spoke to TNM and emphasized that the treatment for dengue is grounded in scientific evidence. ‘Medical research is always evolving with discoveries, but there is no scientific backing for the idea that papaya leaf juice can cure dengue,’ she explained. ‘Even practitioners of Siddha medicine have not recommended papaya leaf juice for dengue; instead, they advocate for nilavembu kudineer, a traditional herbal drink.’
With at least six dengue-related deaths reported in Tamil Nadu this monsoon, the Tamil Nadu Health Department has urged individuals experiencing symptoms of dengue—such as high fever, joint pain, and nausea—to seek medical attention immediately.

Doctors warn against sharing misleading messages that evoke false patriotism or sympathy, using phrases like ‘forward this if you are Indian’ or ‘forward this if you care.’ When it comes to health information, accuracy is critical. Dr Shanti Ravindranath stresses that during times like these, social media should be used responsibly. ‘Messages like these create a false sense of security for those who believe them. The government must step in and declare these claims as fake,’ she said.” _ Source TNM.
